Upington South Africa site - Upington South Africa is the unofficial capital of the Kalahari desert. Upington South Africa is one of the fastest growing towns in the Kalahari desert region and Upington South Africa is a growth point in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. If you expect to see a dusty, dilapidated frontier town, when you visit Upington South Africa, you will be pleasantly surprised. Upington South Africa is a vibrant town with many hidden charms, and, of course Upington South Africa is your gateway to the Kalahari desert and its main attraction, the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, previously known as the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park. Upington South Africa is also your gateway to Namibia and Botswana.

Upington South Africa is a tourism hot-spot, in the sense that both overseas tourists and local tourists come to Upington and through Upington South Africa to enjoy the sunshine, the vast empty spaces of Upington South Africa, the friendly people of Upington South Africa, the unique tribal life of the Nama and San Bushmen around Upington South Africa, the abundant wild life near Upington South Africa, the marvel of the Mighty Orange River running through Upington South Africa, the Upington South Africa Wine Tours and canoeing down the Orange River. Besides a single bus outside one of the local hotels, and the occasional two or three busses at the Augrabies Waterfalls 100 km West of Upington South Africa, you will be hard put to spot a tourist in Upington South Africa!
In Upington, you will be glad to hear, tourists are still a rare sight, and in Upington South Africa you will not find the almost irritation of local people, by tourists that you find in the typical "Tourist Hot-spot".

Upington and the Northern Cape province of South AFrica, is an area of strange contrasts - on your way to Upington South Africa and around it, you will find many (150 km on the Eastern side of Upington South Africa to be precise!) miles of nothing but wild uninhabited veld. The increasing number of wild animals along the roads as road-kill, will give you an idea of the unique experience that awaits you in and around Upington South Africa.
In the Northern Cape province of South Africa, on your way to Upington, in Upington South Africa and around Upington South Africa, you will still find such strange anachronistic sights from the previous centuries as a donkey cart or mulecart, that is still in actual use, and the donkey cart is not an ornament, but the only transport of the owner. You will still find a sheperd, on foot, just outside Upington South Africa, looking after his flock, engaged in what is perhaps the second oldest occupation in the world. You may find the odd case or two of the even older occupation in Upington South Africa, but it will be very low-key and not highly noticeable. UPINGTON IS RESPECTABLE TOWN!

Two of Upington's best known attractions are the two animal statues. You will find the first, namely the statue of the camel and its rider, to the left, just as you enter Schroder Street, the main street of Upington, front of the New Police Station. The second animal statue, that of the donkey driving a bucket water pump, you will find at the other end of Schreuder Street, next to the old mission station and the house built by Schreuder, the first white missionary to reach this remote spot. The Mission Church is the white building right at the Southern end of Schreuder Street, the house is slightly behind it, and the donkey statue to the left.

Upington South Africa is in its essence, still a smallish, very remote Town. So don't expect theatres, large lively night clubs, massive Rave sessions, overseas Haute Couture, several big shopping centres, or scarce medicines.
On the other hand, Upington South Africa is growing at about 6% per year. Upington South Africa is a modern town with all the necessities of modern life, and Upington South Africa is ready for any Entrepeneur who want to do his or her own thing in Upington South Africa.
Upington has at least 15 Churches, with the old Dutch Reformed Church to the west of Schroeder Street, and the English Church, (both shown below) are the most beautifull.

Other items of interest in Upington is the grave of Scotty Smith, the Robin Hood of the Kalahari, The steam train at the Railway station, the Island resort and Accommodation, the avenue of Palm trees on the Island, Kanon Eiland or "Cannon Island" a major agricultural centre with a qauint old world shop, the bridge over the Orange River, the little floating bar called "Sakkie se Arkie" meaning "Sakkie's (little) Ark, same as that of Noah. A little further afield you have the "Spitskop" nature reserve which is is rich in animal life. It is only 10 km away from Upington and well worth the drive and reasonable entrance fee. I have separate section on the Spitskop reserve.
